Fascination of Water
Season 5
20252 episodes
In the fifth season of the “Fascination of Water” series, marine biologist and research diver Uli Kunz explores two habitats that could hardly be more different: In the episode about water-filled caves, he descends into a dark and magical world. In the underworld of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the divers explore places that few people have ever seen. In the Alps, Uli descends with cave explorers into what is possibly the deepest diving cave in Germany, and in a diving mine he shows what is important in cave rescue. In the episode on lakes, Uli Kunz presents an extremely diverse habitat: Lakes only cover around three percent of the Earth’s surface – and yet they are crucial to life on our globe. Their number is unevenly distributed, but there is hardly a region without them. From the Scandinavian lake archipelago to Lake Constance and the African salt lakes to the Great Lakes in North America.

Lakes
2025-06-15 · 45m
There are more than 100 million lakes in the world – and their diversity is as great as their number: lakes supply millions of people with drinking water. The world’s freshwater lakes contain forty times as much water as all the rivers. Many lakes are a hotspot of biodiversity, while other lakes are subject to extreme conditions: They are saltier than the oceans, toxic or hot. Marine biologist Uli Kunz dives into this special habitat – and explores the world of lakes: from the Scandinavian lake district to Lake Constance and the great lakes of Africa and North America. What lives in the depths? How do lakes change over the course of time? What myths and legends are there? We show how lakes form and disappear again. After all, bodies of water have a limited lifespan: some only exist for a few months, others for millions of years.
