After he inherits some money, Harold Bissonette ("pronounced bis-on-ay") decides to give up the grocery business, move to California and run an orange grove. Despite his family's objections and the news that the land he bought is worthless, Bissonette packs up and drives out to California with his nagging wife Amelia and children.

At the Brentwood Asylum for the mentally ill, psychiatrist partners Jane Everest and Alex MacGregor are broken up by the new superintendent, Dr. Charles Monet, who has a low regard for women physicians. At the end of the Great War, German soldiers return home to find the social fabric and civil order disintegrating as communist gangs roam the streets, and food and jobs become scarce. Riots and massacres lead the erstwhile average men to become cynical and desperate.
