NRThe documentary dedicated to the events of 1818, part of the series on the Bicentennials of Peruvian Independence, focuses on three key themes in the process leading up to San Martín's declaration in Lima's main square on July 28, 1821. The first theme is the failed uprising attempted by José Gómez, which culminated in the leader's death. The second is the heated debate that erupted in Lima regarding free trade, among various thinkers and members of the Consulate Tribunal. The third is the anonymous publication in Buenos Aires of the text written by José de la Riva Agüero y Sánchez Boquete, entitled "Historical and Political Manifesto of the Revolution of America," in which he outlines twenty-eight causes justifying the insurgency against the Spanish regime in America. Through the parallel development of the three themes, the viewer is given an idea of what was happening that year in Peru, on the road to the proclamation of independence in 1821.

NRFrancisco Antonio de Zela y Arizaga is notable for proclaiming the first cry for independence in Peruvian territory, in the city of Tacna, on June 20, 1811. For this reason, he is considered a hero of Peruvian independence. Zela died in the Chagres prison in Panama in 1821. It is significant and beautifully symbolic that the first Peruvian leader to rise up against European power over the inhabitants of America died in the same year that marked the beginning of its decline and eventual dissolution. His efforts would henceforth be considered the first to point the way to the independence for which the people of Peru would fight and ultimately achieve. A work by Augusto Tamayo.
