He wants to tell Hanka his biography, which is suspiciously intertwined with the journalist's life. He is under surveillance of the secret police, anxious to get their hands on the info that he is carrying. When the ship is in the middle of the Baltic sea, martial law is declared and the ship is militarized. The captain announces he will turn and return the home port. Many anguished passengers put the life vests on and jump into the sea, where they are picked up by two German ships. The teacher, however, decides to return to Poland and continue the struggle for freedom.

He hopes that she will leave Poland and join him, but at the moment this is impossible. One night, he has a strange dream. In it, he is running through a mist-covered meadow full of purple flowers. Nearby, on a railway embankment, he hears a woman's delirious cries. In the darkness, the lights of a passing train slowly begin to grow brighter. Before he can save her, the dream ends. When Krzysztof has the same dream a month later, he wonders about its meaning. After receiving a letter from his wife saying that she intends to remarry, Krzysztof feels lost. While browsing through an atlas of reproductions of paintings, he comes across the works of a young painter. As he looks through them, he discovers that the paintings correspond to his visions. Krzysztof decides to find the artist.

Security service officers follow their steps. It’s the beginning of a gripping tournament in which also priests and curb dealers will play their parts. Each side has aces up their sleeve.

Zofia's roommate is Jan Liski, an officer of the Security Office who raises his stepson, Kazio, alone. Zofia uses the Red Cross to search for her husband Antoni and son Zbyszek, with whom she lost contact during the war. The commemorative clock left by the Germans brings back memories of her native Kresy, the Nowosiolo estate and the beginning of her love with the Polish settler - Antoni.
