In 2003 he was appointed artistic director of the Théâtre national de Nîmes, leaving that post for the equivalent at the Théâtre national de l'Opéra-Comique in June 2007, where he remained until 2015. Deschamps is the nephew of Hubert Deschamps and his mother was the distant half cousin to Micheline Winter who married Jacques Tati, Upon the release of the animated film The Illusionist this non-biological relationship to Tati has been openly challenged by the grandchildren of Jacques Tati in a published letter to Roger Ebert. He studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand where he met Patrice Chéreau and Jean-Pierre Vincent with whom he made his first stage appearances, before moving toward a professional career in theatre, at the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre and the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique de Paris. He joined the Comédie-Française under Antoine Vitez and directed his first play in 1977. In 1979 Jérôme Deschamps was advised by Jacques Tati on Les Oubliettes and created a play Les Deschiens from Antoine Vitez's commission for the Ivry spring. In 1981, with Makeieff he founded the Les Deschiens company, which in 1993 became a television series on Canal+ with Yolande Moreau. He was the director of the 6th Festival du court-métrage de Saint Maur in 2008. Source: Article "Jérôme Deschamps" from Wikipedia in English, licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0.

The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob poster
7.4

In this riot of frantic disguises and mistaken identities, Victor Pivert, a blustering, bigoted French factory owner, finds himself taken hostage by Slimane, an Arab rebel leader. The two dress up as rabbis as they try to elude not only assasins from Slimane's country, but also the police, who think Pivert is a murderer. Pivert ends up posing as Rabbi Jacob, a beloved figure who's returned to France for his first visit after 30 years in the United States. Adding to the confusion are Pivert's dentist-wife, who thinks her husband is leaving her for another woman, their daughter, who's about to get married, and a Parisian neighborhood filled with people eager to celebrate the return of Rabbi Jacob.

This ambitious young singer, ready to do anything to overthrow the one she admires, is she not also caught in the trap of a diabolical game that is beyond her? Where does the danger come from? It is with a semblance of chronology and to the rhythm of Antoine De Caunes' not unpleasant voice-over that we are told the story of this unusual troublemaker, who, with his extraordinary ease of writing, put the competition light years away in the 1980s. A mini-documentary that reminds us, if it were necessary, that intellectual buffoonery died with Pierre Desproges.

The life of a "big" restaurant seen as a world unto itself, a world apart with its own inhabitants, rules, intrigues, movements, hierarchy, history and stories, internal and external relationships... an organic world that pulses, moves, shouts, cries, sings and, of course, eats. Here, the particularity of their vision lies in the stage set-up, which offers two separate, parallel spaces that interact with each other: the "visible" world on the dining room side, and the "underground" world on the kitchen side. At intermission, the spectator switches sides, seeing the same story from two radically different points of view.

With their faces of sweet lunatics or lighted beaufs, citizens of the ordinary or pochards between two wines, they interpret, in twos or threes, conversations seized on the zincs of the bistros or in the corners of our kitchens. A few minutes of delirium or absurdity. The Deschiens are the actors of Jérôme Deschamps's troupe, who, as usual, with his accomplice Macha Makeieff, track down the little nonsense of everyday life, between humor and ferocity.
