Germany, the 1930s. A young scientist, Professor Johannes Werner discovers rays of life-giving power. One day, after being invited to a military industrial concern to see a new European invention, Werner meets his former pupil Huber. Huber, a traitor and fascist, has restored the professor's apparatus according to stolen plans and is demonstrating it as his own invention. Werner rejects the proposal for joint cooperation and, at a meeting in the hall of scientific associations, reveals his real name and resolutely reveals the criminal intentions of the revanchists.

Despite the latter's intrigues, Negina's benefice performance is triumphant and she receives a large sum of money, part of which Dulebov himself has to provide to keep his face. Still, the entrepreneur refuses to prolong her contract. One after another ecstatic admires come to her expressing their affection, among them Narokov, Naluzov and Velikatov. She leaves honest but dull Meluzov and goes away with rich Velikatov, motivated not by greed but by the desire to work on stage, the only thing she is really in love with.

He must find the answer to the question: "What is the meaning of life and what have I been able to do for people?" The protagonist of the film, Zaur is a radio journalist. Throughout the plot, he seeks the answer to this question, but finds it difficult to find the answer, and the complex contrasts of life confuse him.
