Early years of Lithuanian independence from the soviets. Rebellious, weak hearted, but strong willed boy Saulius arrives at a youth sanatorium where he meets some charismatic friends, fights for the love of his life and gets some valuable life lessons from his coach.

After his girlfriends' suicide, Gediminas moves back to his single mother living in a block of flats opposite Kaseta's home. In his attempt to make himself oblivious, the young man works as a taxi driver at night. Grief, self-reproach, mother's alcoholism and illness (epilepsy), pestering and cynicism of the clients picked up from night clubs toss Gediminas into an emotional abyss. The painful experience dissolve the tiny bits of his fragile wish to live. He visits a psychologist, a psychiatrist and a self-group for families of suicides, but one day he breaks down. Vilnius Trolleybus Park is sold to a young investor, who wants to change trolleybuses to more convenient high-tech, wireless, pilotless vehicles. Needless to say, that this high-tech wonder will require very little maintenance, so the drivers and supporting staff will be fired. But it is way more than that. Without the old trolleybuses the city is never going to be the same.

Soon after he was struck down by a mysterious mental illness, which would plague him for the rest of his life. During his short lifetime, Ciurlionis produced over 300 paintings and 300 musical compositions. Supporting him throughout his short and painful life was his beloved wife, Sofija Kymantaite, a journalist and political activist.

The social ferment in late 19th century Russia which led to the 1917 Russian Revolution is movingly portrayed in this lengthy historical drama, which is very faithful to the 1907 novel The Mother by the celebrated Marxist writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). In the story, "the mother" has no other recourse than to watch her decent, kindly husband turn into an animalistic, drunken brute as a result of working in the inhuman conditions of a steel mill in the town of Sormovo. When he begins to express his suppressed rage by beating her, she is defended by her teenaged son Pavel. After his father's death, Pavel is forced to go to work in the same factory. However, Pavel and his friends begin investigating Marxism and socialist thought, and work to organize their fellow workers.

The investigator even figured out his first conviction. Only a few days later the mistake became obvious and the true killer was found, but for now the friends tried to answer the question themselves: who is to blame and is it to blame?
