Illustrator Donald Barstow living in a run-down studio building develops an interest in the married Mrs. Blakely. She invites him to Philadelphia for the weekend and he accepts leading to unexpected complications for both.

In a prologue, as a woman pages through a book, male figures, including a musketeer, a cowboy, a swordsman and a military officer, appear and bow. In the main story, the visit of Prince Ferdinandi sends New York society ladies scurrying to purchase gowns for the upcoming ball. The woman seen earlier looking longingly at the book, model Marjorie Bowen, fights off the advances of Cadwallader Smith, who accompanies a patron. When handsome Sir Derwain Leeds, the prince's aide-de-camp, arrives to see his fiancée Yvette Fernau outfitted, Marjorie exchanges a shy smile with him.

Reporter Tom Warder exposes a theatrical producer, Isaac Shuman, for sexually harassing young women, including Tom's girlfriend. After being forced out of town, Shuman returns years later to frame Tom for theft, leading to his imprisonment and the tragic death of his family.

But the police arrest her, at no evidence whatsoever other than possession of the baby, for kidnapping.

During a fiercely contested battle, a wounded Union officer seeks refuge in a Southern home. He is discovered and assisted by Nellie Morton, who hides him from Confederate forces. Confederate officers eventually enter the home and find the officer's Union coat in the library, confirming an enemy presence. Despite the discovery and the high tension of the search, the Union officer manages to escape his pursuers. As they prepare to give chase a courier arrives with news of General Lee's surrender, halting the conflict.

Pretty country girl Hazel Dorn sings in her church choir when she sees a newspaper advertisement for chorus girls placed by theatrical manager John Hern.
