Two partisan miners are entrusted with the task of honor to transfer safely three orphan children from a dangerous zone of fighting to the safe liberated territory. In the beginning the two miners feel humiliated because they would like to engage in more important action, but later they become big friends with the children, especially with Peter, the youngest one.

Although the director evidently committed suicide, Vesna, who has uncovered evidence of a conspiracy, is convinced that he was murdered. Temnikar's family prepares for Christmas, but to him, it's the time of dark premonitions and anxiety. In the mountain cave, hidden by snow, the wounded partisans are hiding, and Temnikar suspects the treason. Once the White Guard patrol shows up at Temnikar's doorstep, he finds out about their plan to go and finish off the wounded partisans.
