Yoshio Kawai is a lowly singer at the Bonbon-za, a third-rate theater in Asakusa. Together with fellow low-ranking actors Tokuri, Kameda, and Hanayama—and centered around Yumi, the beautiful dancer who serves as their mascot—they form a poor but cheerful group of five.

Twenty years after the father’s death and the mother and child’s separation, when they are reunited, a pistol aimed at the mother glints coldly in the child’s hand.

Shinjiro, the only son of Sakai Hospital, could not forget Mie, a geisha he had met at a munitions factory during the war.
