Based on the historical legend, this commercially successful film delves into the context of why Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in fond remembrance of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The film is based on the life of Bengali, Hindu monk Narendra Nath Datta aka Vivekananda from his birth (1863) to his returned to India from the west (1887). It is spiritual take on Vivekananda life. Movie's focus is on Vivekananda's internal struggles and questions about the meaning and truth of life.

Handsome and fairly good-looking Anil Kumar is employed with Natwarlal, who is a criminal gangster. Natwarlal asks Anil to find employment with Shailendra Singh, and after doing so, seduce his beautiful young daughter, Neetu Singh, marry her, and thus get himself a stake in their property and wealth. Anil agrees to do so, and does find employment with Shailendra. What he had not counted on was Shailendra's second wife, Kamini, who has an agenda of her own, and who decides to keep Anil for herself.

Arjun Rai lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, and works as an auto mechanic for a living. He and wealthy Sapna are in love with each other, much to the chagrin of Sapna's dad, who wants her to get married to someone wealthy. When he goes to propose for Sapna's hand, her dad asks his watchmen to throw him out, while doing so they find out he was armed, as a result police are summoned and he is arrested. Sapna re-locates to the U.S. to stay with her aunt, who subsequently convinces her to get married to Gautam Saigal.

One is that Shabana is the daughter of a Courtesan named Najma; and that Khairudin has secured employment in order to kill Yusuf.

Set between 1945 and 1951 in the pre-Independence state of Hyderabad, the film tells the story of a young peasant, Ramiah, who rebels against the corrupt rule of the Nizam. Baring witness to the oppression and hardship faced daily by those around him, Ramiah leaves his village. However, after befriending a Marxist activist and participating in the Independence struggle, he eventually returns to wage guerilla warfare against the landlord class.

The film is based on the life of Razia Sultan (1205–1240), the only female Sultan of Delhi (1236–1240) and her speculated love affair with the Abyssinian slave, Jamal-ud-Din Yakut.
