The heroine learns about the death of her husband, who is dying in the bed of his young mistress. The heroine seems to be going crazy. Having found a estranged girlfriend with her brother, she is ready to do anything to understand why her husband chose not a wife, but a 21-year-old girl who came from the village. At the end of the picture, she herself finds herself one step away from death.

Without touching on the social problems of the Siberian village, the picture tells about the love of the beautiful Nadka and the eccentric Semyon. The image of the village is impressively shown, condemning lovers and provoking Ivan, Nadezhda's husband, to commit a crime.
