The gangsters flee to Berlin with stolen jewels and the unconscious Jascha. Homolka, one of the gangsters, refuses to abandon the boy, nurses him back to health, and pretends to be his uncle, claiming his parents are on an American tour. Homolka develops motherly feelings, facing ridicule from his friends and Trude Berliner.

Circus themed films usually provides a thrilling drama. The relatively obscure "Schatten der Manege" provides just what you'd expect. Doing the trapeze act angle, combining it with romance and jealousy for a darker plot, it has a lot of the right the ingredients. Does have moments where it spends too long of circus footage, which ruins some of the pacing, but otherwise a fine circus flick.

During World War I, Ellen Lange runs away from boarding school to her brother Rolf in Kiel. Rolf, a vice-helmsman, tries to send her back, but she goes to Berlin and finds a job at a music store through “Aunt Jenny.” Her boss sends her to Copenhagen with a false passport to deliver a violin containing stolen papers. In Copenhagen, she meets Erik Larsen, a German secret service agent, and joins the service to atone for her mistake.
