Soviet propaganda film about Alexei, a village boy who comes to Odesa to earn money in 1901. While still on the train, the hero gets acquainted with a young worker Mitya and witnesses the arrest of the underground leader Savva, who distributed Lenin's newspaper "Iskra". The boy quickly gets used to the city, learns that one must fight for one's rights, and becomes one of the most active Leninists in Odesa.

Young musicologist Marina Gabrielyan arrives in Leningrad with the aim of finding and restoring the first symphony by renowned composer Sergei Kornilov. Despite the composer's active resistance, she manages to find individual parts of the symphony and, with the help of young composer Gurov, restore the music.

The film was made on the basis of the literary version of events in the life of the famous Russian ethnographer, anthropologist, biologist and traveler who studied the indigenous population of South-East Asia, Australia and Oceania.
