Young advertising executive Vatanen suddenly quits his job and his whole life in Helsinki, and decides to spend a while in the Finnish wilderness. Follows the life of a pauper child Vike Nilonpoika from the early 1900's to the 1960s. During this time he works as a lumberjack in Lapland after running away from the despotic master. He soon becomes familiar with hookers, card hustlers and alcohol.

The night watchman carries the songbook with him, and it ends up, via a sad prostitute, a police officer, and a night shelter resident, with Pekka, who is waiting for Pirkko's forgiveness and comes to pick up his fiancée.

The life of First Lieutenant Heikki Lilja, who is dating Colonel Taipale's daughter Tiina, is turned upside down when his company is ordered to search for the dangerous escaped convict Kahle-Kustaa. Things are complicated by Lilja's friend, the artist Paaso, and Paaso's admirer Merja Metsä, Lilja's strict superior Colonel Taipale, and Police Chief Mäkinen.

Mauritz Grafvenhjelm, alias Moppe, an impoverished nobleman, and his friend Ville enjoy a carefree life as vagabonds in summery Porvoo until Moppe finds a large sum of money and receives a reward for it. After celebrating thoroughly at the Belvedere restaurant, he wakes up in the morning in a cell with no memory of what happened and learns that he has become engaged to the restaurant owner, Miss Svea Jonson.
