The tragic story of the life of revolutionary and romantic Nikolai Bukharin and his failed attempt to refute the charges against him. In parallel with the trial of Nikolai Bukharin, the whole life of this amazing man, who was ready to die for his ideals, flies before us.

In an unnamed Latin American country after a coup d'état, a military junta comes to power. The army deployed to the streets, the civilian population is exposed to hard terror. A wave of arrests follows, some former senators - liberals and communists - are sent to prison. Some patriots that have gone underground try to figure a plan for their release. They buy a small shop opposite the prison in the name of Francisco and Maria Vardes. From its basement they plan to build a 90-meter tunnel. Three years of enormous effort, deaths and nervous breakdowns are not spent in vain.

A performance by the Taganka Theatre based on a play by Molière. The last work of Anatoly Efros. The production features music by Duke Ellington.

The action takes place in the 1920s. It is about the everyday work of criminal investigation staff in a provincial town, who are engaged in an unyielding battle against a well-organized gang of murderers and robbers.
