At The Kingdom, Denmark's most technologically advanced hospital, a number of strange and otherworldly events begin occurring, much to the dismay of its doctors and patients. A ghostly ambulance appears and disappears, the voice of a little girl calls to a patient in an elevator shaft, and a doctor's fetus begins growing at an alarming rate.

The mutant fetus is born. Dr. Helmer comes under heavy scrutiny for a botched operation that left a patient braindead, and begins to dabble in the dark arts in order to ward off those seeking an end to his career. Hypochondriac Mrs. Drusse finally does have something bad happen to her medically when an ambulance hits her.

In a large office building, a mysterious murder is committed, after which the body disappears. Lily Hansen, the building's helpful and talkative cleaning lady, is driving the detective investigating the case crazy with her interference. Of course, the mystery can only be solved with her help.

Ellekjær's future is on Ann-Marie's mind. She tries to get her adopted daughter, Grete, married to Erik von der Rude, but Grete loves the farmhand Jørgen. They decide to get married, after which Annemarie disowns Grete. However, Ann-Marie's other daughter, Elin, is in love with Erik. Erik's past in Copenhagen catches up with him, and Elin moves in with her sister. The film then goes through a series of complications before Elin and Erik can finally get married and Ann-Marie is reunited with her daughters.

The story opens just before Christmas, when solitary, apathetic bank clerk Flemming Borck uncovers a plot to rob his bank. Thomas is newly divorced and is borrowing Bibi & Asger's apartment. He goes to the doctor because he is feeling unwell and is given some pills. At home, he gets drunk and is visited by his upstairs neighbor. At the same time, Thomas is being stalked by an unknown man on the phone. When Thomas meets Evy, he thinks they are going to have a nice evening, but she has other guests as well. After a night out on the town where Thomas gets drunk, he seeks out his divorced wife and begs her to come back.
