Ange, the mayor of a distant mountain village in Corsica becoming depopulated has launched a drama workshop supposed to give new life to the region. To this end he is to sign a contract with a cabinet minister for whom the villagers are rehearsing a play. It is the very day of the coming of the minister that Ange chooses to pass away, which infuriates his cantankerous wife Lellè. The contract must be signed anyway but how to go about it, mainly with such a family as Ange's: Rinatu, the nationalist, traditionalist son; Sauveur, the former local policeman turned politician; Marcia, Rinatu's daughter, determined to perform the play at any cost; Ange's two wives, the official one: the bad-tempered Lellè, and the unofficial one, the Indian domestic worker of Indian origin? To say nothing of Pantaleone, the deputy mayor, whose wife has been one of Ange's (numerous) mistresses.

After a crazy and tumultuous night embellished with singular encounters, Michel's awakening is brutal and painful. Not only does he find himself accused of murder, but his wife cannot be found.

A gypsy arrested by the police refuse to give an alibi that would prove his innocence. Reserved and dreamy, he would rather keep intact the memory of a moment he shared with two naked women, a few hours earlier, on the edge of the Bois De Boulogne.

After he has seduced Claudia, Gabriel is concerned when she mysteriously disappears. Is she stricken with guilt? Is she ashamed that she gave in too easily to him? Gabriel, dit Le Poulpe (The Octopus) is a laid-back private investigator who works on cases for his own pleasure. He is drawn to the fictional Loire Valley port of Angerneau, with his lover Clotilde who has been summoned by the police concerning the defacement of a deceased relative's grave. Since Angernau is her home town, she wants to leave it as soon as possible to avoid old acquaintances, but Gabriel stumbles on intriguing events concerning the cargo of a ship in port.
