Two friends who are doing civil service flee to the Austrian Alps to escape being forced into the army. While there, one of them rediscovers his past and they realise that it's going to be more fun than they thought.

The up-and-coming designer Marie Haller falls in love with Max, the noble heirs of Wartenborg's well-known Kristallschleiferei - without knowing that he is her half-brother. When Marie learns the truth about her ancestry and shortly thereafter Max is killed in a tragic accident, she turns away in dismay from the noble family.

Johannes is killed by an insidious firebomb in an attack on Marta's apartment. Apparently the arsonist also dies in the flames, but his body is never found.
