Pavel is a Czech partisan fighter in the waning days of the war. Just as peace is declared, Pavel is shot in the spine and sent to the hospital emergency ward. As he fades in and out of consciousness, he recalls the events that led to his participation in the underground. Holding German occupation commander Engelchen responsible for all the horrors and deprivations heaped upon his comrades, Pavel is kept alive by the possibility of recovering and exacting vengeance upon the Nazi officer - no matter how long it takes.

Frieda and August Walkowiak celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. However, the marriage has been in crisis for some time. August wants to spend his old age in peace, while Frieda has no intention of giving up her position as LPG chairman. The problems in the countryside are huge, collectivization is not progressing fast enough, even comrade Heinrich Rantsch is clinging to his individual farm. Frieda fights for progress, even in her private life, because not only her burden but also her higher position is a thorn in her husband's side. During the wedding anniversary celebrations, Frieda is called to the LPG. This is the cause of the family quarrel that has been in the air for a long time. August demands her resignation. In vain - and so he moves in with Rantsch. Their daughter Helga also leaves the house because of the tensions. Frieda collapses. When she is in hospital, August comes to his senses.

Fritz Weineck, a worker′s son from Halle, loves music – and dreams to make a living out of it one day. When his friend Alfons, a World War I veteran, gives him a trumpet as a gift, Fritz seems to come closer to fulfil his dream. But then, Fritz realizes that after the end of the German empire workers still have to desperately fight for their rights, and decides to use his instrument for political means: At a meeting of militant workers, he uses his trumpet as a signal horn. But Fritz suffers a severe setback when a comrade dies in the fight for an arms depot because of his fault.

Götz von Bredow's elk-leather trousers have their own special meaning: whoever wears them cannot come to any harm. Only they must not be washed. The meticulous Mrs. Brigitte cleans them anyway - but they get lost because the squire Hans-Jürgen, who is guarding them, has to save the life of Eva von Bredow, who is floating in a wash barrel. Meanwhile, Privy Councillor Lindenberg has arrived at the Bredows' house and loses a large sum of money in the game that does not belong to him. He wants to make up for the loss with a robbery. Suspicion first falls on Bredow because his trousers were involved, but Lindenberg is convicted and sentenced to death. Willi Kritz earns his living as a night watchman and corpse washer at the East German Pathological Institute at the Berlin Clinic. In the process, he found another source of income: he steals pathological exhibits and smuggles them to West Berlin disguised as a Berlin bear. His customer is Frundsberg, and the delivery always takes place in his Yankee sleigh.

London in 1856. Karl Marx is living in exile in the British capital. One day, "Mohr", as Marx is called by his friends, meets the 13-year old worker′s son Joe. The boy works every day for twelve hours in a spinning mill and even has to work night shifts although that violates current rules. Marx tries to end the illegal activities of the spinning mill owner and one night shows up at the mill together with an inspector. But his foray is undermined by a robbery by the rebellious raven gang that is led by Joe′s brother Billy. The spinning mill owner of course takes this chance to blame his young workers for the theft. But Marx is not let astray and does not stop to fight against child labour. Furthermore, he tries to get the members of the raven gang back on the straight and narrow – with success.

Factory workers Yvonne and Evchen have their nose full of married men who appeal to them again and again in their home for a short adventure. In short, they decide to profit from this state: Evchen goes to her home with the willing men and puts her in a clear situation of which the then suddenly emerging Yvonne takes a photo. Then it says: 5000 marks or your wife learns about this failed side jump. So far, so profitable! But when the two women encounter the art hehler Domski in their bar, things get out of control...

Together with her accomplice and lover Klaus Grunow, she plans to break into the church. But Paul Schulte sees through his wife's plans and tries to dissuade her. Last years in the Life of german Dramatican Georg Büchner. Around the year 1830 he and his fellow students try to initiate a revolution in Germany, but they are not successful. Büchner has to leave the country and seeks exile in France and Switzerland, where he falls ill with typhus.

Civil engineer Berger is looking for his mother and learns that she has died and was last in a home run by the notorious construction company Huberty. When the company boss Huberty becomes the victim of an assassination attempt shortly afterwards, suspicion falls on Berger, but Huberty's death is linked to the fraudulent bankruptcy of the construction company. The boss's wife is found to be the culprit. An unpleasant surprise awaits Berger, a civil engineer from Hamburg, when he returns home after years of working in Mexico: his mother has disappeared. Her tracks are lost in a "retirement home" run by the Huberty Society. Berger suspects that his mother has been the victim of a crime. He hunts a murderer and becomes the hunted himself...

Detlev gets caught up in a whirlwind of friendships and love affairs: with the caring widow Karin; the well-to-do hair salon owner Ute Schöbel; the cultural editor Norma Goldbach, the photo reporter Kerstin and the student Andrea Binz. Detlev, who initially proves himself as a friend and advisor, but also as a lover, becomes increasingly self-confident. He is also successful in his work and finally emancipates himself from his mother. Although he loses "his" women in a turbulent odyssey, Detlev has transformed himself from a mama's boy into a thoroughly acceptable man.
