The incidents include the fraud of local elections, the opening of Hungary's borders towards Austria, the ensuing tide of East German refugees to Hungary and Czechoslovakia for transfer to West Germany, the pompous ceremonies at GDR's 40th anniversary, the inept transactions the Politburo took to salvage the situation, the resulting dismissal of their leader Erich Honecker, the international press conference in East Berlin on 9th November 1989, at which Politburo member Günther Schabowski erroneously announced the immediate opening of the 'Iron Curtain', which finally led to the collapse of socialism in the GDR and the other East Bloc countries.

Rainer Berg is a frozen food delivery man who has been let down by life. He has withdrawn from the world in order to avoid emotional trauma. His outlook on life is shaken when he is assigned a new colleague, ex-hairdresser Moerer, who turns out to be a pain in the neck. "This van is too small for two!" Eventually, the hard-working wife who is also earning their support convinces Herbert to go to a clinic for treatment. But is it a clinic he needs? Or is Herbert rebelling against a society that is too ordered, too sterile, too buried in the monotony of routine?

Anselm Kiwitt, a television reporter, accompanied by two of his colleagues, Jochen and Harry, go to the small island of Mellog in order to film the behavior of the seagulls during the breeding season. They are joined by an elderly biologist, Dr. Schlinz, who is interested in the island's fauna. During their first report, they discover how aggressive seagulls can be during the nesting season, when they feel threatened. But a much more dramatic event happens: they discover the body of a man.
