A gang of city children is secretly practicing to enter a musical competition. All of them plunder their parents' supplies in order to build their own stage and amplifiers. Baffled by these unexplained thefts, the parents decide to hold a meeting as their suspicions turn to a group of camper folks living across from their flat. The tables are turned when the residents take a camping holiday of their own and end up being mistrusted by the locals as much as they themselves did their own neighbors. Meanwhile, the children's gang meets a rival group of kids who are planning to enter the same competition.

Martijn receives little attention from his parents, who run a village bazaar, and is often left to his own devices. He has plenty of imagination, but cannot live up to the expectations placed on him. If he fails his school exams, he will be doomed. Only his grandfather in the retirement home understands him and listens to his stories. When a film crew arrives in his hometown to shoot a fairy tale movie, Martijn is chosen for the lead role and his grandfather is given the role of wizard.

He still wants to participate in the school outing and play and wants to come up with a way to make the play actors 'fly' like fairies. By chance the local inventor Quirinus Drijfhout and his son Felix have just perfected their 'Zerostraler', a machine that can make any object float in mid air.
