Tatsuo Shimamura

An old fisherman makes the biggest catch of his life.

An animated film based on one of the renku (collaborative linked poems) in the 1684 collection of the same name by the 17th-century Japanese poet Bashō. The creation of the film followed the traditional collaborative nature of the source material – the visuals for each of the 36 stanzas were independently created by 35 different animators. As well as many Japanese animators, Kawamoto assembled leading names in animation from across the world. Each animator was asked to contribute at least 30 seconds to illustrate their stanza, and most of the sequences are under a minute (Yuriy Norshteyn's, though, is nearly two minutes long).

An adaptation of Mimei Ogawa's short story. It was a night with a beautiful moon. An optician visited an old lady who was living in a house alone just outside of town. Since she has gotten older and her eyesight has weakened, she bought a pair of large-rimmed glasses made of tortoise shell...

A collection of images that interweaves animation, special effects and live action. A symphony of transformations where animated fish swim in real waters, buddhas dissolve, and ducks cut real paths in unreal rivers. The film evokes the four seasons in Japan incorporating natural and cultural elements- bird, flower, moon and wind alternate with dragon, temple, statue and pagoda.
