Laurence Arcadias

France

Laurence Arcadias is a French-born animator, director and writter working in the United States. She holds a Diplôme supérieur d’expression plastique (DNSEP) in Animation from the Institut d'arts visuels (IAV) in Orléans, France. In 1985, she co-founded the French short film production company Amorce films. She has taught at the City College of San Francisco, the California College of Arts and Crafts, the University of California, Berkeley, the San Francisco Art Institute, the San Francisco Academy of Art University and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

Acting credits

Le Nouvel Hiver is a slightly disillusioned reflection on the state of the world (the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the USSR, the Gulf War), the events of which are the thread of this year's Notebooks (1 January 1991 to 31 December 1991). Of course, these Notebooks are far from this sinister current events because life is elsewhere, in creation and in a quest for the absolute. And then, Le Nouvel Hiver takes us into surprising encounters (with Ken Loach, Brigitte Lahaie) and transports us to places I can't live without (the Ardèche in the North).

During a gathering of astronomers at the American Astronomical Society Meeting, the scientists reached for the stars and made an animated short about a total eclipse of the sun that they were about to collectively observe, using the first film of an eclipse made by magician Nevil Maskelyne in 1900.
