Around 1900, Zaza was the undisputed star of the "Variétés parisiennes". Bonded with pianist Cascard, she indulges in adventures and falls in love with handsome Bernard Dufresne. A short affair. Surprised by her friend's behavior, she believes he has a mistress in the provinces. In reality, he is married and Zaza, faced with her daughter, prefers to step aside. From now on, she'll live for her art, and will always refuse to renew her acquaintance with the man who made her suffer.

Pierre Laurent, a former doctor, has established himself as a renowned healer in Brittany. A young girl, Isabelle, who follows his results with admiration, declares her love for him and becomes engaged. The reactions of his former colleagues bring Pierre before the courts. A misunderstanding with Isabelle thwarts the wedding plans. Later, the young girl, suffering from a brain tumor, allows herself to be cured by the healer. Pierre does not cure her, but leads her to her death without suffering.

Dr Pierre Richard learns that his wife Madeleine has been unfaithful for years. This comes as a shock after a decade of supposedly wedded bliss. Back home, he demands answers, and a long night of explanations ensues.

Lyane is a singer and daughter of the producer of the operetta: "C'est une fille de Paris". She convinces the composer of the music, Jacques Kellermann, whom she loves, to sign her piece. The famous composer Jean Paget, who cannot put the work to his advantage, declares to Jacques that Lyane had a child by him. Shocked, Jacques breaks with the singer who soon knows the celebrity. Finally, he realizes that happiness is ready to be seized, because the beauty still loves him...

To conceal his nighttime infidelity from his wife Gisele, Pierre calls in a particularly shady private detective to concoct an alibi. He is introduced to a certain Robert Crémieux, who will pass himself off to Gisèle as a childhood friend with whom he spent the night until the early hours of the morning. The so-called childhood friend turns out to be a delinquent accused of burglary and rape on the very night he was supposed to be with Pierre. Pierre is immediately suspected of being his accomplice and, trapped by his own turpitude, arrested. Entangled in his lies and denials, he has to admit his infidelity to get out of the impasse.

Alain is the only son of a wealthy bourgeois couple. He takes violin lessons in Ménilmontant, where he is spotted by Fleur, a poor girl: she is going to kidnap him and demand a ransom from the young man's parents, money which will be used to pay for a good lawyer for her brother accused of killing a policeman.

Four noble ladies, four widows, live in isolation in a Berry ch teau. There's the Mme de Bussange, her two sisters Sylvie and Hélène, her sister-in-law Elisabeth and her little boy, who alone will pass on the family name. Relations between the widows become strained and heated, until an attempt is made on Elisabeth's life. The culprit, Sylvie, kills herself. In despair, Mme de Bussange sets fire to the castle and dies in the inferno.

A young opera dancer tries to help her mother financially by performing in a dubious cabaret.

When he finds a package in the metro, given this period of restrictions, Mr. Truche thinks it may be a good deal, he takes it home but discovers a woman's head inside. The latter finds Christiane to his liking and soon shows he is prepared to do anything to take her away from Daniel, including kidnapping little Pierrot.

Elizabeth Rockwell is indignant when she finds her château filled with squatters, a widower with five messy children, who have no regard for private property rights. On her way to Paris, Gisèle meets a young motorist who offers to be her guide. Gisèle, suspicious, refuses and disappears. But Pierre finds her and takes her to dinner at Saint-Germain-des-Prés. On the other hand, Gisèle, out of jealousy, goes off on her own to visit "Paris by Night", showing us some of the attractions of the "Moulin Rouge", "Naturistes", "Rock and Roll", etc., etc., etc. Pierre pursues her and eventually discovers her hotel. The next day, he takes her for a walk around Paris. They dine at an inn where a supposed car breakdown forces them to spend the night. There was only one room, but the virtuous Gisèle locked Pierre in the bathroom. All ends in the most honest engagement in the world.

Smalltown confectioner Lespinasse, hopeful of being reelected as chief councillor, is opposed by Darcepoil, the local druggist. Darcepoil arranges for the incumbent's defeat by having Pantaflon, a nightclub singer, lure him to the nudist camp on the Isle of Levant, where Lespinasse is photographed surrounded by half-naked women. At home, he is berated by his wife and thrown out of office; but he returns to Levant with the penitent Pantaflon and is welcomed by the nudists and voted camp president. His forgiving wife follows him and herself becomes a nudist.

A police inspector tries to capture international robbers who are actually also police.

Director Jean Delannoy's immediate followup to his brilliant Les Jeux sont Faits was the more conventional Aux Yeux du Souvenir (aka Souvenir and To the Eyes of Memory). The film is based on a true story, wherein an France airliner managed to survive a journey from Rio De Janeiro to Dakar with two of its engines incapacitated. To this already intensely dramatic situation has been added a romantic subplot involving Claire Magny (Michele Morgan) and Jacques Forester (Jean Marais). The love story adds very little to the film; fortunately, neither does it detract from the film's overall quality. As was the case with many French productions of the 1940s, Aux Yeux du Souvenir benefits immeasurably from the Wagnerian musical score by Georges Auric.

During the stagecoach trip of a frightened group of inhabitants of Rouen, Elisabeth Rousset, known as "Boule de Suif", renders these people a signal service, but comes up against their stupidity and their sufficiency. A little later, Boule de Suif assassinates the formidable Prussian lieutenant whom his friends had nicknamed Fifi and who shamelessly displayed his taste for pillage and his sadistic tendencies.
