A gritty behind-the-scenes look at modern work slavery through Vladimír, a Ukrainian construction worker in Prague whose life unravels when Czech professor Richard marries Vladimír’s love Aljoňa to “help” her. Consumed by jealousy and desperation after losing his earnings, Vladimír commits a desperate crime.

The distinctive artist, typographer, and writer Josef Váchal is known to the public primarily for his Blood Novel. The surrealistic exuberance of this defense of 19th-century pulp fiction caught the attention of Jaroslav Brabec and his colleagues, who found a corresponding image of 20th-century "trash." The authors' interest focuses primarily on the silent film era, with a journey through the history of cinema continuing through the advent of sound film to the present day (auteur cinema of the 1960s, modern horror), formally employing techniques such as tinted film. The versatile parody intertwines a colorful plot with the story of the author (Váchal/Paseky), who comments on and creates his book, and is further split in the plot into the characters of Fragonard and the Master. As with Váchal, reality increasingly enters the fiction, so that the only "happy ending" turns out to be the artist's finished work.

The Golden Gate is a well-known children's rhyme, but also an ancient image of the Last Judgment, when souls pass through the golden gate into another world and, before being admitted, are fought over by an angel and a devil, good and evil. In the spirit of this analogy, the film tells a compelling contemporary story about an unconventional love affair. Eva Štanglová is a university professor. After a failed marriage, her husband has just left her and moved in with his Italian mistress. Eva feels betrayed and completely alone. There is someone close to her who is just as lonely. He is a Moldovan guest worker, working as a bricklayer on scaffolding outside Eva's window.

The story takes place at the beginning of the 20th century. Little Lojzík, whose mother was killed by lightning, lives on a farm with his father and an old farmhand. The harsh world has taught him to perceive images that remind him of his lost mother's embrace. He searches in vain among people for someone to whom he can once again become emotionally attached. He finds no support or security in his father, his mother's sister, or his stepmother Róza, even though she was the only one who showed compassion for the boy at the beginning of their life together. The only one who truly shares Lojzík's fate as an abandoned child is an ordinary chicken...

But the main blow is yet to come for Věra: it comes in the form of payment slips she finds among her husband's belongings, confirming regular payments to an unknown woman! Věra turns to a family friend, Pepa, her husband's colleague from the research institute. While drunk, he reveals that her husband has been having an affair with another woman and has a child with her. Věra is shocked and offended. She had wanted a child so badly, and Vladimír ended up conceiving one with a complete stranger. Věra sets out to find this unknown woman.
