Reiko Minagawa leaves her home in Okayama to avoid an arranged marriage she doesn't want. Upon arriving in Tokyo, she calls Akira Isomura, a college student for whom she has feelings. Isomura is pleasantly surprised by her call, and promises to meet her at the train station entrance in about ten minutes. However, unaware that there are two entrances, the two of them spend hours waiting at different gates and are ultimately unable to meet.

In 1945, in a Shanghai filled with a palpable sense of unease as the war was still raging, Atsuko Kijima and Ryuji Kudo fell in love and exchanged promises of marriage. Ryuji was deployed shortly thereafter, and after the war ended, he was taken to Siberia as a prisoner of war. Atsuko, who had returned to Tokyo, clung to the promise she had made with Ryuji—that if he were safe, he would “come to the garden of St. Nicholas Cathedral at noon on Christmas Day.” Relying on that promise, she went to St. Nicholas Cathedral at noon on Christmas Day in both 1946 and 1947, but Ryuji never appeared.

Seventeen years have passed since that ill-fated mother and daughter parted with tears in their eyes. The mother, unable to reveal her name, peered through the window at her daughter in her wedding gown, her eyes filled with tears.

The eldest, Kozue (Todoroki), is an intelligent and dynamic modern girl, the second, Yoko (Otowa), is a modest girl with Japanese tastes, and the third, Hanayo (Wakayama), is a mischievous girl who has not yet lost her schoolgirl temperament. All three have feelings for Kiichiro Matsuzaki (Uehara), the president of a magazine company. He was married to Kozue, the eldest daughter, by agreement between their parents, but it was Yoko whom he loved, so he asked her to end her engagement to him.
