Grishka Hamuraru, the grandson of the underground fighter Samson Hamuraru, who is still unjustly considered a traitor in the Moldovan village of Vioreni for having led a partisan group to ruin during the war, decides to conduct his own investigation and restore his grandfather's good name.

For a long time, the chairman of the collective farm, Andrei Spirya, has been dreaming of moving the village, which lies in a lowland and is often flooded by floods, to the mountain. Some of the collective farmers are against resettlement. Suddenly, a severe flood occurred, which caused a lot of destruction.

A difficult historical period in the life of the Moldovan people, who fought in the 1930s against the yoke of royal Romania and for reunification with the Soviet Union.
