Katja Junge plays the title role in this West German romantic drama, directed by noted cinematographer Thomas Mauch. Maria is just as girl who can't say "Nein," thus she goes through several lovers before the plot proper gets underway. When Maria finally falls in love for real, it is with repressed astronomer Robert Duessler. Afraid to make physical contact, Duessler prefers to gaze at Maria from a distance through his telescope. Not surprisingly, the film's title translates to Mary of the Stars.

Professor Schott, director of the Oberland Mountain Observatory, has discovered a new star, which he names "Nova Hercules." Working alongside him are Dr. Gerellis and Dr. Alvens, both vying for the affections of the new assistant, Dr. Aenne Bruck, while the professor's wife, unhappy in her marriage, is interested in Dr. Gerellis and therefore wants a divorce. Andras Pulac, a young pianist, refuses to perform a concert in honor of a senior Soviet leader, as a sign of rebellion against the 1956 invasion of Hungary. His refusal, although he does not know it, harms the organizers of a demonstration against the communist cruelty, since his concert had been chosen like slogan. When Pulac finds out, he agrees to give the concert. Andras and Maria Kondor, the daughter of a communist journalist, are in love and decide to get married before the concert. Meanwhile, communist repression in the streets provokes the anger of the Hungarian people and gives rise to a real revolution.

DIII88 is not a war picture per se, because it takes place in peacetime, but the young, fresh-faced air aces enthusiastically look forward to the coming war. The propaganda is blatant: The only thing that matters is dedication to duty and unconditional commitment to the Fatherland.

The river level rises, the dam can no longer hold back the floodwaters – it breaks. Panic erupts, everyone tries to save at least some of their belongings from the rising waters. Those who manage it flee to the farm of old dike captain Doorn. His sons, Peter and Heinrich, help wherever they can. In doing so, they save the local schoolteacher and his beautiful daughter, Renate, from certain death. Both men love Renate, but this rivalry is not the only reason the brothers become enemies. While Heinrich, a trained engineer, advocates for river regulation to prevent further dam breaches, Peter vehemently argues for reinforcing the dam.
