Graça dreams of fire. When she wakes, she and her daughter, Duda, gather their few belongings and leave the apartment in the middle of the night. The building is occupied by homeless families. The fire breaks out on an uninhabited floor. Graça sets out with her daughter in search of a safe place to spend the night. The living and the dead follow in their footsteps.

The narrative takes place in 1888 and tells the story of Lenita, a young woman, raised by her father, with an educated background, who disregards the existence of a man at his intellectual height. The film exposes the character's internal conflicts and the conventions of the time.
