This play, which premiered in Berlin in December 1920, was considered one of the biggest theater scandals of the last century. There were tumultuous scenes during performances and later even a trial – which, in turn, led to Arthur Schnitzler banning his "Reigen" from being performed until 1982. For 30 years, however, the series of ten erotic encounters about people in very different relationship situations has held a firm place in German-speaking theater life. In the summer of 2012, the ORF Lower Austria regional studio recorded the 120-minute production by Helmut Wiesner, who discovered an original version of the play in Switzerland, at the Reichenau Festival in the Neuer Spielraum.

Sympathizing with seniors who still aspire to some dignity and self-realization, he helps them get around the rules, such as smuggling in contraband, and ends up inspiring them to form a rock band and enter a free podium competition. Hanna Forster is still waiting eagerly for the return of her husband Karl, who has been in Russian captivity for seven years. Hanna brought the family and joinery on her own through the war and post-war years. When Karl finally returns, Hanna is overjoyed, but luck does not last long. Heavily injured and traumatized, Karl finds it difficult to get used to everyday and family life again. To prevent the bankruptcy of the joinery, Hanna makes a momentous decision.

Svea Classen and Peter Pirnegger are happily married in Stralsund. They are married in a civil ceremony, and now that Svea is pregnant, they plan to have a church wedding in Peter's hometown, the Alpine village of St. Josef. Peter's parents, Inge and Joseph Pirnegger, the hotelier and mayor of St. Josef, live there. Svea can't imagine a church wedding in the Austrian mountains. After some hesitation, however, she agrees to one anyway. Joseph plans to keep them in the village long-term. Peter receives an offer to become chief veterinarian in the national park planned there—a dream come true for Peter.

An all-girl Catholic boarding school near Vienna for the wealthy Austrian elite and their children. The school is thriving, but faith is declining and the upper floors are de­ser­ted. The head of the institution, a young energetic nun, fights with ardor against this decline. Martha, 12, one of the nun’s favorite pupils, is a devoted girl who wishes to expiate the sins of the world. Encouraged by the nun, she is given a penance belt and taken to the abandoned upper floor.

The film is set in the near future, in a world of perfect capitalism. Society is sustained by a class of top achievers; meanwhile, so-called minimum recipients live under sedation in Fortresses of Sleep. The great majority of top achievers view themselves as happy. An outsourced agency has been established for the rest: Life Guidance is charged with turning these individuals into optimal people as well. Alexander has internalized the system but one wrong word to his child triggers Life Guidance. He starts to rebel and encounters the horror of the system in all its brightness and affability.
