The story of three torn apart families on the verge of Sinterklaasavond, the Dutch equivalent of Christmas Eve.

Petty criminal Bert Oliemans goes down for stealing jewellery from a former SS man. After his release he is constantly followed by police commissioner Van Houthem and a greedy gang leader, both out to get their hands on the stolen jewels.

A boy is resentful of his mother's budding romance with the best friend of her late husband, and is torn and confused about his emerging feelings for Toni, a young girl in his neighborhood. His fascination with an antique Oriental knife leads him to steal it and he uses it to try to impress Toni while at the same time trying to break up his mother's relationhip.

Painter Peter Hartman is arrested at the scene of a murder. He soon turns out to have ties to the victim's young widow. As Inspector Stroomer begins to unravel the mystery, two very different sides of the story are presented to him. Now it is up to Stroomer to find enough photographic evidence to make out which version is the truth.
