Erich, grandchild of Pauline and always underestimated by her, gets to know Hella Bergson, the daughter of the theatre critic Peter Bergson, and falls in love with her - but doesn't have an idea whose daughter she is. He plays her some melodies from the first operetta he's ever composed and Hella convinces him to have the operetta performed in the "Olympia". During rehearsal of the operetta, however, a fight breaks out between Erich and Hella over a stupid misunderstanding.

However, his creative spirit gets the best of him and he does the mural which is widely acclaimed to be a great work of art. Felder , an art dealer, is not overly pleased with this turn of events as he has been pleading with Monika to divorce her shiftless husband and marry him.

The rest of the class, however, remains dismissive until the day Hans, leader of the class jazz band, dies. His last wish was for the band to play at his grave, which the principal does everything in his power to prevent. Hanna, however, manages to get the class to play at the boy's grave - the ice is broken. Martin's diary, which is found in the school and in which the pupil confesses his love for her, almost becomes the teacher's undoing.

But then the frontier hunter and the woman become truly passionate about each other, and the drama ends with murder and suicide. Based on the stage play by Karl Schönherr.
