When two software entrepreneurs develop a method of extracting memories, one comes to regard their discovery as a Frankenstein monster that must be destroyed, and finds himself at odds with dangerous forces.

Junior Pastor Augustus Goldfinch is suffering a crisis of faith when he is summoned home to visit his "dying" Aunt Julia, the last surviving member of his family. A Southern eccentric with a taste for amateur mysticism, Julia persuades her stick-in-the-mud nephew to spend the night in the local haunted house...where, he learns, how his mother and father died there one terrible night.
