The Emmaüs community opened and functioned thanks to the generous impetus of Abbé Pierre Groues, bringing together a cross-section of the underprivileged: unemployed truck drivers, former paratroopers, young people leaving prison, etc., and underprivileged families. The short stories of Guy de Maupassant enjoyed a renaissance in the early 1950s, thanks in great part to the Max Ophuls production Le Plaisir. In Trois Femmes, three De Maupassant stories are dramatized, each conveying the central theme of women falling in love. In the first, a black female carnival entertainer causes an uproar when she falls in love with a white soldier. In the second, a young bride is pressured into having a baby to collect a huge inheritance. And in the final episode, a pregnant girl is "adopted" and protected by a small circle of friends. In standard De Maupassant fashion, each of the three stories in Trois Femmes is capped by a surprise twist.

A gangster is back in business after a while and tries to take it back the hard way, but things don't go as well as planned. At the same time, we watch the fate of a young nurse in a hospital. Soon, the two stories meet when the gangster faces his problems.

In order to inherit her husband's old aunt more quickly, a greedy peasant woman engages in various dishonest maneuvers.

Sophie Mallet is the lively manager of a detective agency, assisted by Emile Gachit, her conscientious but not very effective right-hand man. His life in prison seemed sweeter, and his attempts to return were in vain. He owes his salvation to the affection of a local kid.

Pépito runs a gang of thugs with authority. He has a natural son, Gaston, a professor of literature in Aix-en-Provence, whom he has hardly ever seen. Gaston announces himself for Christmas, and Pépito decides to make him look good by moving into his headquarters: a château where the crooks will be able to exercise their talents as composers.
