Antoine de Caunes

Born 1953-12-01 · Paris, France

Antoine de Caunes (born 1 December 1953) is a French television presenter, comedian, actor, journalist, writer and film director. He is the son of two prominent French personalities, television journalist-reporter Georges de Caunes and television announcer Jacqueline Joubert. He is the father of the actress Emma de Caunes. He began his career writing theme songs for cartoons for Antenne 2 under the pseudonym of Paul Persavon, including Cobra and Space Sheriff Gavan (known in France as X-Or). His early TV appearances included Chorus (1975), the series Les Enfants du rock, again for A2, and then his breakthrough with Nulle part ailleurs for Canal+. In 1988, De Caunes started making an English-language version of his French music programme Rapido, for Janet Street-Porter's youth and entertainment programming strand DEF II, with new episodes of Rapido usually being broadcast as part of DEF II's Wednesday night schedule on BBC2. He then went on to create the long-running magazine programme Eurotrash for Channel 4, with this humorous post-pub entertainment show co-presented by Jean Paul Gaultier for the few series and featuring regular spots for European stars like Lolo Ferrari. He also presented a short-lived chat show on Channel 4 called Le Show. In addition, he appeared in an advertising campaign for Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles ice lollies. From 2013 until 2015, he hosted the daily evening show Le Grand Journal on Canal+. He provided voices in the Aardman Animation TV show Rex the Runt. De Caunes launched a new magazine Vieux, about issues faced by the elderly, in May 2024. He is a long-time AIDS awareness campaigner, fronting the organisation Solidarité sida (AIDS Solidarity). One of society’s last taboos is elderly desire, which remains strong for many: half of older adults remain sexual. Advances in medicine and lifestyle mean people in their 70s, 80s, or 90s can still explore and enjoy intimacy. Yet society often ignores this—aged bodies are deemed unattractive, and sexual desire beyond tenderness is stigmatized, sometimes leading to mistreatment in care homes where couples are separated. The documentary Vieillir et jouir sans entraves confronts this taboo. Featuring celebrities and real-life couples—including Francine and Marc (60 years together) and gay couple Jean-Marc and Alain (34 years together)—it explores aging bodies, love, sexuality, and the challenges of libido and illness. The film highlights initiatives supporting sexual expression for older adults, including LGBT-friendly housing and sex-positive care, urging society to rethink its view of aging intimacy.

Inspired even as a boy by the Folies Bergere, the legendary Paris cabaret venue, couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier always wanted to stage a show there. "But what story can I tell?" he muses in this doc about the six months of preparation that went into the show. "Mine." Combining fashion with film, dance, theater, and unapologetic over-the-top-ness, the revue offers a 40-year career retrospective of the designer who is practically never spoken of without using the phrase enfant terrible. Notorious among cinephiles for his costumes for The Fifth Element and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover and among pop fans for Madonna's pointy cone brassiere, he also incorporated teddy bears and S&M fetish gear as design motifs. In the show, the fanciful and outrageous meets the naughtily witty (a skit sending up Vogue dragon lady Anna Wintour) and the poignant (a tribute to his partner Francis Menuge, who died in 1990).

To celebrate this anniversary, CANAL+ is presenting a special prime-time program titled “40.” It’s an opportunity to defy the passage of time by revisiting some of the defining moments of pop culture in general and CANAL+ in particular. More than sixty—that’s the number of talents, artists, and actors whom the channel has had the privilege of watching emerge, flourish, or grow, and who have reimagined in their own way the films, series, and short-form programs that have shaped our shared history since November 4, 1984. On the stage of the Folies Bergère, Antoine de Caunes gracefully and effortlessly bridges the gap between 1984 and 2024 to host this evening, which alternates between studio segments, pre-recorded footage, and live performances.
