Today marks the thirteenth anniversary of Takashi's father's death. Even though the time for the memorial service is fast approaching, Takashi and his wife, Mio, are consumed with desire and devour each other while still wearing their mourning clothes. The memorial service was held simply at Takashi's brother's home, with only his wife, Misako, their university-aged son, Masaki, and Mio and his wife present. Mio quietly places her hands together in prayer in front of the portrait of her father-in-law, whom she has never met...

Rie, a housewife, spends lonely days without her husband taking care of her. One day, a middle-aged woman, Mitsuko, visits Rie's house to sell mourning clothes. Rie tries to refuse, but after being forced to try it on by Mitsuko, Mitsuko says, "You haven't been with your husband recently, have you?"
