In Raging of the whole world are the turbulent early years of Alexander Goudveyl central. The story of Alexander's childhood is also the history of an era, the fifties and sixties, and a never solved murder case. Murder goes back to an authentic incident: in 1956, right before Christmas, a policeman was shot in broad daylight in Maassluis during a large-scale evangelistic campaign. The film also plays a failed escape attempt with a herring trawler involved in the turbulent days of May 1940.

Erik is a Dutch ten year-old schoolboy who is studying insects at school, and gets shown and explained a bit about them by his kind and knowledgeable nature-loving grandfather, whose country estate is a good place to do so and turns out to have a book on insects, which allows Erik to pass for one night, rather like Alice in Wonderland, as a miniature man among thus giant-looking, talking insects, who discuss their and other species and their lives with him, mainly winged ones, such as bee, fly and wasp.

The small house of the Vermeulen family breathes him: the TV blares Hans Teeuwen shows all day long, there are posters everywhere and numerous CDs and DVDs swing through the room. The Teeuwen Excess leads to fears and delusions in Katinka. She gets nightmares in which Hans Teeuwen reveals himself to her: she hears his voice regularly and she thinks she sees him appear now and then. Katinka tells her psychiatrist about her nightmare that Hans Teeuwen rapes her teddy bear while calling out her name. The psychiatrist advises her to meet Teeuwen in real life, because in this way she may be able to adjust the image she has created herself.

In a sultry café, a man and a woman size each other up during their first encounter. Wary of revealing too many secrets or suffering unexpected blows. It leads to an exciting and hilarious game of challenge and defense and a thrilling dance.

The protagonist in the film is an actor (René van het Hof) who is acting his life. He is a nuisance, but only for those who have had enough of his play acting or who are ashamed to be around this clown. His wife breaks up with him because she just can't tolerate the man any more and he seems to accept that in an apparently matter-of-fact way. He leaves the city for a cottage in the countryside.
