Daniel Faitaua was born and raised in Christchurch to Samoan parents, growing up in a close-knit Pasifika family. His grandmother insisted Samoan be spoken at home, shaping his cultural identity and early language development. He attended Catholic Cathedral College and later graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Arts (Japanese & American Studies). He then trained at the New Zealand Broadcasting School (CPIT/Ara).

Sunrise struggled against Breakfast with the ratings.Sunrise went off air because of finance issues in April 2010 leaving Breakfast the only morning news and talk show in New Zealand again until TV3 launched their second attempt at a morning news show Firstline in 2011 .
