Fatima and Sister Anne have seemed alive in their minds, from the moment Fatima, in her mother's lonely hut, accepts an invitation to visit Bluebeard's castle until, after marrying him, he is about to behead her for entering the room where he keeps the heads of his ex-wives. Time and again, they have also rejoiced when Fatima's two brothers rush in, and they rejoice inwardly when they have chased away the evil Bluebeard, just in time to save poor Fatima's life.

This is an excellent version of one of the greatest of all comic operas, featuring superb singing and orchestral playing. And it's not just the two headliners; listen, for example, to the entrance of the stepsisters at the beginning of Act One. Nevertheless, some viewers may find the staging problematic, with singers in clown-like costumes and sets featuring human-sized rodents. Those seeking a more conventional production might want to consider the Houston Grand Opera DVD, also on Decca, with Cecilia Bartoli and Raul Jimenez. Both sets are wonderful, but, for me, Joyce Didonato and Juan Diego Florez are slightly to be preferred. Highly recommended.

Based on a tale by Charles Perrault, Tom Rubnitz's The Fairies comes complete with frogs, princes, kind fairies, and evil stepsisters—all costumed à la Rubnitz. Featuring Sister Dimension as the fairy godmother, Michael Clark, and others, the tape playfully illustrates a familiar fairytale moral, as each person gets what they deserve. The evil girl spits up toads, while flowers and jewels emerge from the mouth of Matilda the Good, and a dancing prince carries her away.

When the youngest of the seven children overhears his parents conversation about this sad situation, he cries for a while. But barely everyone knew, that he was about to come up with a thoughtful idea that could restore their peace and bring back their home.
