Brian Friel

The playwright Brian Friel stands among the giants of Irish literature. From the 1980s onwards, he withdrew from media and public life. This film sets out to show, through family, friends, actors, directors, as well as via his own handwritten and typed letters, personal archive, and readings from some of his plays, how Brian Friel re-defined Irish theatre in the second half of the 20th century.

A play by Frian Friel, adapted for television by Hugh Webster. The story of three Londonderry citizens who took refuge in the Guildhall, escaping from the gas bombs and confusion of riot-filled streets during a confrontation between civil rights marchers and the military. Their story emerges in a series of flashbacks as a judge presides over a court of inquiry into their deaths.

The Fantastic Francis Hardy travels the most remote corners of Wales, Scotland and Ireland attempting to heal those who wish to be healed. His wife Grace and manager Teddy complete this nomadic triptych, each with their own telling of the loss, love and struggle of life on the road with a seemingly predestined Faith Healer.

Friel contrasts Gar's cloistered emotional life with his gregarious social persona by portraying him as two distinct characters, a public self (Donal McCann) and a private self (Des Cave).
