A young actress in Cold War Berlin struggles to decide whether or not to accept a new role, working with an old leftist director in a deserted theatrehouse. In this interesting World War I drama, Bruno Ganz gives a compelling performance as Jakob, an obsessive inventor who lives in a Swiss village. He receives unconditional support from his friend Otti (Walo Luond), but that is about all; the other villagers do not tolerate Jakob's eccentricities very well, and regard him as a crackpot. He perserveres in spite of this obstacle and finally invents a viable carriage that does not run on wheels but on a tread. Unfortunately for Jakob, the military have already come up with the same invention: the tank. The discovery finally breaks him, and he is quickly shuttled off to an asylum.

As a mother, wife and babysitter, Eva Maria Splitt has an exhausting full-time job. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of time for the stock market news, because for several months Eva Maria participates in the stock market game of a daily newspaper. As she fights the pros in spite of worldwide price falls with their fictitious depot, the enthusiastic son-in-law of the shrewd speculator offers a position in his investment advice. The dream job brings Eva Maria into a serious conflict: her retired man has been looking forward to the European tour with caravans for a long time - although Eva Maria Camping can not stand.

The film interweaves three layers: the centre is Kleist's play "Penthesilea". Like from a distance Kleist observes the relationship beween man and woman, when he transfers into mythical Greece what in his time became a problem for him in Prussia - and remains to be a problem also for us. The director's associations during the work form the second layer. Reality and fantasy blend to an imaginary biography of Kleist, the third layer. At the end of the film Kleist is identical with his title character Penthesilesa.
