A shoemaker has delusions of grandeur when he inherits from a baron whose life he saved.He prevents his daughter from seeing a mere carpenter, abandons humble old friends, and shows poor judgment by falling for a couple of poseurs.

A son, in defending Prussia circa 1814 under the thumb of Napoleon, washes away the disgrace of his aristocrat father who had collaborated with the French and caused the deaths of countrymen.

During the Seven Years' War, Prussian Major von Tellheim sacrifices his own fortune to save a Saxon estate from being plundered. After the war ends he is discharged and left penniless when the government suspects his noble deed was actually due to a bribe. Believing his lost honour makes him unworthy Tellheim breaks his engagement to Minna von Barnhelm, but she tracks him down to a Berlin tavern to win him back. To test his love Minna pretends she has also lost her wealth, prompting Tellheim’s protective instincts to finally override his stubborn pride. The film concludes with a royal decree from Frederick the Great, restoring Tellheim's rank and fortune and allowing the couple to marry.

Josef Brandlmeier is a true Munich original. He is a beer delivery man, a stately figure, not so young anymore and often a little grumpy. He is not married, but he harbors a secret love for the widow Therese Enzinger, who reciprocates his feelings.

The title alludes to the popular 1925 song I Lost My Heart in Heidelberg composed by Fred Raymond with lyrics by Fritz Löhner-Beda and Ernst Neubach. The film taps into the nostalgic reputation of Old Heidelberg.

Penniless Peter Schild looks for work when arrived in Germany. Working as a private eye he has to observe a young lady who is willing to marry an unemployed actor against the will of her parents.
