Gideon van Meijeren

Sander Schimmelpenninck investigates the far-reaching influence of social media on our society and politics. To this end, he talks to journalists, moderators, philosophers, lawyers and troll hunters. How does social media use undermine our democracy and why is no one doing anything?

What happens behind the scenes at Forum voor Democratie? For this documentary, PowNed spoke with multiple sources who have been involved with the party and its environment for years. They discuss the culture, ideology, and ambitions within the movement and share their experiences with topics such as conspiracy theories, ideas surrounding white supremacy, and dealing with critics. Why are they choosing to tell their story now?

'Gideon: Searching for the truth' takes the viewer with Van Meijeren on his quest for answers to questions about the current global health crisis. Questions that are common among the population, but to which he, and therefore the people in the country, do not get an answer in the Dutch House of Representatives. A place where Van Meijeren says he often feels like 'crying in the desert'. Where he gets no answers to his 'justifiably pressing' questions. Where instead he is invariably framed and judged by form, which makes any form of democratic debate impossible in advance.
