Chaos ensues shortly after a young man in a remote village in northern Senegal refuses to accept his role as the new village chief.

El Hadji Dia is a wealthy cattle rancher who lives in the village of Fellata with his four wives. A ruthless businessman, he is obsessed with the daughter of a poor rancher, named Malado. Having incurred a huge debt to El Hadji, he has no choice but to accept the deal he offers him in order to settle his debts and avoid prison: to give him his daughter's hand in marriage.
