A tragic love story about a soldier and a circus performer, based on the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan.

Set in England on the eve of the War in Europe. The musical opens at an evening party being hosted by Duke and Duchess Meldrum. Among their glittering guests are the famous opera singer Melva and the Scottish painter Darmen. Although the duke and duchess believe their niece has developed an understanding with family friend Doctor Brand, in reality Jane is secretly engaged to Darmen.

François de Rougemant is the second son of a rural French noble family who is serving at the Louvre Palace in Paris. He is unaccustomed to life at the royal court, and is unexpectedly challenged to a duel. He wins the duel, but his opponent was from a powerful family, and he fears retribution. Count Clément, who served as his second in the duel, advises him to flee.

The time is the Azuchi-Momoyama Period. While Yukariko is a woman, she is by nature masculine and, as she was raised in a family with no heir, she learned general martial arts. Then an unexpected story is told to Yukariko, whose father died suddenly. It is said that because Yukariko is the daughter of the daimyo of Aki, and twins with the current feudal lord, she was given to an adoptive family in secret. As a matter of fact her brother the feudal lord, Midorio, is ill, and in order that the other provinces may not know, she is told that he wants her to serve as his substitute....
