The scene is set in Kashmir, in the northernmost part of India, where the great Indus River meanders. Kamala, the granddaughter of Maharaja Chandra Kumar, the powerful viceroy of Benares, is promised to become the chief lady-in-waiting of the daughter of Goyar, the Grand Duke of Delhi. She falls in love with Cavalry Captain Rachman, who hails from a farmer’s household. Her amour with the captain, however, is strongly opposed to by her grandfather, grandmother, and her aunts, on the grounds that the young lovers are too vastly separated in their respective social position.

In the face of executives insisting on selling UFA, producer Kaufmann, infused with the same spirit as President Klitzsch, declares that they will make a low-budget entertainment film that the public is sure to love. Who will take on such an audacious task? When Kaufmann himself is shuttered, one man takes up the challenge—Theo Wegmann, an assistant director at UFA. Foreseeing the end of the age of silent films, Theo suggests making a talking movie with singing. If Hollywood can do it, so can we here in Berlin! With the condition that he gets to choose his cast and staff, Theo promises Kaufmann that he will produce a low-budget movie that will entertain everyone and be a major hit.

Austria, 1888. Crown Prince Rudolph is bored with the ostentatious royal life in the Austrian court. He is forced into a marriage contract with Stephanie, Princess of Belgium. The couple is incompatible and they live in unhappy discord. Grand Duke Jean Salvadore, Rudolph`s cousin, is in touch with the liberals of the realm and his lover, Milly, is a commoner. The Grand Duke has broken the shackles of convention and he enjoys a life of freedom much to his cousin`s envy. During a performance of “Hamlet”, Rudolph meets Maria Vetsera, the daughter of Baron Vetsera, the wealthiest man in Vienna. The Prince and Maria fall in love at first sight...

It is the beginning of the twentieth century. Edward, the second son of an historic Scottish baronial family, leaves home to join the army. One day, he receives a letter from his twin brother Laurence who has fallen ill. He begs Edward to return home. Edward does as he is bidden, only to learn that Laurence is seriously in debt and has mortgaged the family estate. Laurence expects Edward to assist him in his plight.
