As a chemist and "scientist important to the war effort", Berlinger was not required to go to the front during the Second World War, but it was slowly discovered that he was helping persecuted people to escape to Switzerland. Pressure from the Gestapo cost Marlit her life, and Berlinger fled to South America. It was not until 1968 that he returned to the western part of Germany. He meets Roeder again, who is now a senator and has become rich as a "building tycoon", and meets Maria, a teacher almost 30 years his junior, who looks strikingly similar to Marlit.

Through an intrigue, Franz Moor manages to have Karl, his brother, disinherited and disowned. He then founds a band of robbers and becomes their captain. Franz wants to win over Karl's fiancée Amalia and fakes Karl's death, and later the death of his father, whom he has locked up in a tower. Karl has to answer for ever greater crimes committed by his gang and increasingly doubts his decision. Plagued by longing, he leads the gang to his father's castle, where he speaks to Amalia once again in disguise. He frees his father from the dungeon, but he dies of fright when he learns that his son has become a criminal. Franz commits suicide when the robbers storm the castle. As Karl has conspired to the death of his gang, a happy future with Amalia is out of the question; under these circumstances, Amalia wishes him dead. Karl kills her, renounces his gang and his life of crime and hands himself over to the law.

Alfred soon tires of Marianne's clinginess and takes the child to his mother in the Wachau region, while Marianne works as a dancer in a variety show. At the lowest point of her humiliation, Marianne returns to her parents' house. Her father forgives her, and Oskar asks for her hand in marriage, despite her having a child with Alfred. A happy ending seems imminent until Marianne learns what has happened in the Wachau region.
