The rules of the game are set by a child who is asked questions by the director about love, jealousy, the number of people involved, kissing and kissing in the film. Two women and two men then act out human relationships according to set rules - as desire, love, jealousy, anger, indifference, tenderness, arguments, separation, staying together, conversation, getting used to each other, longing.

The successful publisher Susanne Bredemeyer receives an extraordinary present from her husband Leo for her 60th birthday: a romantic country house in Sweden. Far away from everyday life, the two, whose marriage has become routine, want to make a fresh start. Arriving in Sweden, however, it quickly becomes clear to them that the omissions of the past few years are not so easy to make up for. And as if the unfamiliar life in nature wasn't exciting enough, the entire Bredemeyer clan gradually turns up to visit Leo and Susanne. There is no question that the rural idyll will soon be haywire.

Colonel Mortimer's son Gregory, his pride and joy, returns to the ancestral Cornish estate by the sea for the summer after loosing that year's only Horse Guards officer promotion to his neighbor-buddy Eric. By ancestral tradition, that means another delay too for his long-planned marriage with neighbor's daughter Rebecca, who already doubts if the are actually in love. Mortimer's new housekeeper Elisabeth proves irresistible for father (platonically) and son, but is held back by a family secret concerning her late mother Catherine. Eric also has a confession to make.

A letter is stolen from Her Majesty's chambers. The perpetrator is already known, but an official prosecution is impossible as the stolen material could be extremely compromising once it has been made public. A house search by the Paris police is unsuccessful. Master detective C. Auguste Dupin is assigned the task of using his ingenuity to recover the letters by other means.

Gregor finds out that his mother has cancer.

Perkus and Chase are slacking their lives away in a dusty living room. Finding a gas mask, the friends get torn apart by the question: Is this world outside really that bad?

Using excerpts from films made by students of the Berlin film academy within the last 50 years, this movie creates a fusion of intense cinematic expressions and gestures. It shows the spirit of past times, aesthetics and attitude, making film history palpable.
