Born 1981 in Ho, Ghana, Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi [ aka crazinisT artisT] is a trans woman with the pronoun sHit if not She. Va-Bene currently lives in Kumasi, Ghana but works internationally as a multidisciplinary “artivist”, curator, philanthropist and a mentor across several countries. She is the founder and artistic director of crazinisT artisT studiO (TTO), Our Railway Cinema Gallery (ORCG) and perfocraZe International Artists Residency (pIAR) which aimed at radicalising the arts and promoting exchange between international and local artists, activists, researchers, curators, and critical thinkers. As a performer and installation artist, crazinisT investigates gender stereotypes, prejudices, queerness, identity politics and conflicts, sexual stigma and their consequences for marginalised groups or individuals. With rituals and a gender-fluid persona, She employs her own body as a thought-provoking tool in performances, photography, video, and installations, ‘life-and-live-art’ confronting issues such as disenfranchisement, injustice, violence, objectification, internalised oppression, anti blackness, systemic indoctrination and many more.

NRVa-Bene stands at a pivotal moment of transformation, beginning to embrace femininity within a society shaped by rigid gender norms and strong religious influence. Having preached in church for many years, Va-Bene now enters a process of unlearning and questioning deeply ingrained beliefs. As a performance artist, Va-Bene confronts these constraints, using art to challenge and expose the limitations placed on gender expression in Ghanaian society.

Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi is a trans activist and performance artist based in Ghana who identifies as a ‘transvatar’—a reflection of the many identities she embodies. The documentary intimately follows her journey as she navigates daily life, artmaking, and her political struggles as a Black African LGBTQI+ activist. Filmed at perfocraZe International Artist Residency (pIAR), a space founded and run by Va-Bene in Kumasi, the documentary features interviews with her and members of the pIAR art family, along with archival performance footage. As Va-Bene shares her story, the film travels with her to the north of Ghana in Tamale, and to the southern coast, where remnants of one of her performances linger in the dungeons where enslaved women were held within Elmina Castle.
